Vegan 15 Peaks Challenge

(Sponsor Kirsch on this challenge to raise money for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society)

On 5th June  2010, supporters of the Extreme Vegan Sporting Association will be attempting to climb all 15 Welsh mountains over 914m (3000 feet) in under 24 hours.

Starting at Pen y pas as the sun rises they will first scale the Crib Goch ridge* before going on to climb Crib y Ddysgl, Snowdon, Elidir Fawr, Y Garn, Glyder Fawr, Glyder Fach, Tryfan, Pen yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd, Carnedd Llewelyn, Yr Elen, Foel Grach, Garnedd Uchaf and Foel-fras. The route taken will be 48km long with nearly 4000m of ascent and descent. Mountain Leadership and safety management is being provided by Lupine Adventure.

Why are they doing this?

Well there will be upto 9 of them so I guess everyone has their own reasons some reasoning (other than madness) banded about on the e-list. The stereotype of vegans as unhealthy and weak is being gradually broken down. Vegan athletes such as Brendan Brazier and Carl Lewis have shown that vegans can excel at sport. The Vegan 15 Peaks Challenge is an opportunity for vegan runners and mountaineers to help in breaking the stereotypical view of vegans as being weak.

To highlight the advantages of the vegan lifestyle! Veganism is good for the animals, people and the planet. Animal agriculture is one of the largest contributors to global warming and species loss, producing more greenhouse gases than the entire transport sector combined. It is also frequently cruel to animals, and bad for human health.

cribgoch3Why Vegan?

A vegan diet (based on eating a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts and pulses) is an environmentally friendly diet. It requires significantly less land, water and energy inputs than a omnivorous diet based upon eating factory farmed meat and processed foods.

*The Crib Goch ridge is a serious undertaking which involves scrambling in exposed situations. It should only be attempted by people who have a good head for heights. Adverse weather conditions can make the ridge a very dangerous place. The Mountain Leaders supplied by Lupine Adventure will make a decision on the day about whether to attempt the ridge. Their decision will be final.
