More spaces on April expedition and using Google Sheets
Just an update on our April expedition and an great idea from the (unofficial) DofE Leaders' UK Facebook group. Oh and we've joined Instagram if you are into that sort of thing.
Open Gold Expedition 6-10 April 2015 (Yorkshire Dales)
This expedition filled up in February then last week we got 2 enquirers desperate to do an expedition on those dates so we took the decision to run 2 expeditions side by side. This means that we now have 5 more places on this expedition. If you know anyone who needs a gold expedition (practice or assessed) then please do put them in touch, The price is £219 (inclusive of all camp site fees).
Using Google Sheets - A great idea from the Facebook DofE Leaders' UK Group
On Thursday I noticed a top tip on the DofE Leaders' UK Facebook group from Ju Lewis. Ju has been using Google Sheets for participants to fill in route cards. For those who don't know, Google Sheets are basically online spreadsheets that multiple people can edit at once. I immediately took a look and imported our excel route card in to Google Sheets and tidied it up a bit. You can see the result at the end of this link. I'm a bit new to Google Sheets (and Google Docs and Google Drive) so this may not be explained extremely well but I'll give it a go. If you don't have an account with Google you will probably need to create one at this point (you may have one already even if you don't know it). You then save the spreadsheet to your Google Drive (your area in Google). You can then share your spreadsheet with your participants by emailing them the link (So long as you share it correctly they don't need to have a google account to view or even edit the document).
The advantages that I can think of using Google over Excel spreadsheets are that:
1) You don't need a copy of Excel, you can edit it from any device that is attached to the internet.
2) You (and any other participants) can see if any progress is being made on the route cards. For me working remotely from our participants this is going to be very useful. I can check a route card and suggest changes in the messaging area or even correct some bits and ask the participants to do the rest. There is no sending files backwards and forwards.
The main disadvantage that I can see is that the file cannot be 'shrunk to fit' one page for printing like it can in Excel. However you can simply delete any unused rows or make some rows a bit thinner and I expect that all but the longest, most detailed route card will fit on one page. You can also export to a PDF if you want to print it out later.
